Refund FX differences now book to FX Gain/Loss

Small exchange rate differences on cross-currency refunds now book to FX Gain/Loss instead of sitting in a clearing account.

What changed

When a cross-currency refund settles at a slightly different exchange rate than the one it was booked at, the small leftover used to sit in the Unknown clearing account. It now books to FX Gain/Loss and the Unknown balance clears.

Example: a refund recorded at A$161.74 that settles at A$163.00 leaves A$1.26. That A$1.26 is a rate difference, not missing money, so it now lands in FX Gain/Loss instead of Unknown.

How we make sure it's really FX

The difference only books to FX Gain/Loss when the refund's rate matches the market rate for its date. An off-market or bad rate stays in Unknown, so a data issue is never moved into your P&L.

Scope and timing

  • All Shopify stores.

  • Applies to orders placed on or after August 1, 2026. Prior closed periods are not restated.

  • Amounts are small, usually a few cents to a few dollars per refund.

What this means for you

Fewer stuck balances in the Unknown clearing account, and cross-currency refund FX shows in FX Gain/Loss where it belongs.
