Key Concepts
Smart Adjustments: The umbrella term for Blue Onion’s as of date accounting capabilities, including Snapshot Journal Entries, Booking Management, and automated adjustment detection.
Data Drift: Changes to upstream transaction data from platforms like Amazon, Shopify, or PayPal that occur after the original journal entry was created, requiring adjustments to maintain GL accuracy.
As-of Date: The date representing the data snapshot used to generate a journal entry or view, allowing you to see how data appeared at specific points in time.
The Three Pillars of Smart Adjustments
1. Snapshot Journal Entries
Snapshot Journal Entries allow you to view your journal entries as they appeared at any historical date. This capability is essential for understanding how your data has evolved over time and reconciling changes.
Key capabilities:
Navigate backward and forward through time using the As-of Date selector
See exactly what data was available when you originally created journal entries
Drill down into individual transactions to understand changes
Compare how entries looked across different dates
Available to: All Blue Onion customers using Journal Entries
2. Booking Management
Booking Management provides a centralized dashboard showing the booking status of all your journal entries in one place. Think of it as mission control for your GL synchronization.
Key capabilities:
Visual status grid showing what’s booked, pending, or requires adjustment
Color-coded indicators for quick status assessment
Action-required filtering to focus on items needing attention
Batch booking capabilities for efficient processing
GL transaction ID tracking for audit trails
Available to: All Blue Onion customers, with enhanced automation for ERP Subledger users
3. Smart Adjustments
Smart Adjustments automatically detects when upstream data has changed after booking and generates the precise adjustment entries needed to keep your GL accurate.
Key capabilities:
Automatic detection of data drift from commerce platforms
Generation of delta-only adjustment journal entries
Scheduled cadence controls (daily, weekly, monthly)
Automatic GL push for ERP Subledger customers
Complete audit trail showing original, adjusted, and delta values
Available to:
Core App users: Manual adjustment tracking and export
ERP Subledger users: Full automation with NetSuite (available now) and QuickBooks Online (coming soon)
Why This Matters
The Problem: Data Drift
Commerce platforms like Amazon, Shopify, and PayPal frequently update transaction data days or even weeks after the original transaction. This creates challenges:
Journal entries become outdated
GL doesn’t match current platform data
Manual research required to find and fix discrepancies
Risk of financial inaccuracies in closed periods
The Solution: Point in Time Accounting
Smart Adjustments solves these challenges by:
1. Preserving History: Snapshot Journal Entries maintain a complete record of what was known when
1. Providing Visibility: Booking Management shows exactly what’s been processed and what needs attention
1. Automating Accuracy: Smart Adjustments automatically detect and correct data drift
Core App vs. ERP Subledger Features
Core App Users
You have full access to:
Snapshot Journal Entries for historical viewing

Common Use Cases
Scenario 1: Month-End Close with Confidence
Close your books knowing that any data changes after booking will be automatically captured and flagged for adjustment, eliminating post-close surprises.
Scenario 2: Audit Preparation
Use Snapshot Journal Entries to show auditors exactly what data was available at the time of booking, with complete drill-through capability to source transactions.
Scenario 3: Platform Reconciliation
When your commerce platform numbers don’t match your GL, use the as-of date functionality to identify exactly when and what changed.
